Course Descriptions

Art 8 – 10

In all Visual Arts courses the following curriculum content will be addressed:

  • Image Development and Design Strategies
  • Elements and Principles of Art and Design
  • Personal, Social, Cultural and Historical Content
  • Materials, Processes and Technologies

All Art students require a sketchbook/notebook and drawing utensils. Each course has an individual course outline.

Visual Arts 8 

Do you love making art?  Or, have you had limited experience with art making, but would love to learn some great new art skills?  This course provides a foundation in art media, methods and appreciation.  Students will sample both 2 and 3 dimensional art experiences in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking.  Emphasis is placed on the development of imagery and the acquisition of the skills and knowledge necessary for a basic understanding of art.

Visual Arts 9 

This course is designed for the student who loves to explore all methods of art making, and is designed for those who are new to art as well as those who enjoyed Art 8 and can’t wait for another chance to create.  This course builds upon the foundations laid in Art 8 with the emphasis on 2 and 3 dimensional media.  Students will develop their understanding of the elements and principles of design through individual project work, as well as related historical/cultural significance and influence.  Instruction will include basic techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Visual Arts: Studio Art 10

This course is designed to provide a more mature study of the foundations of art through the applied elements and principles of design.  Emphasis is on the development of students’ individual artistic abilities.  Students are encouraged to develop their own sources of inspiration for design, imagery and research skills in the medium or technique chosen.  Draw, paint, print, and sculpt your ideas into existence.  Learn about the role art can play in your life, and discover the great career possibilities the arts can hold.

Visual Arts: Art Studio 11

Students focus on refining techniques and media while continuing to explore a broad spectrum of new materials, technologies, and processes in various ways. Students continue to develop skills in both 2D and 3D media, selecting and combining them in more sophisticated ways. They will learn about reflecting the interconnectedness of the individual, community, history and society through art making. Students will also begin exploring art related careers.

Visual Arts:  Photography 12

Students focus on refining photographic materials, technologies, and processes in new (e.g., digital), traditional (e.g., darkroom) and/or alternative ways (e.g., cyanotypes). Students will increase their independence through the creation a personal body of work founded in photography. They will explore how photography reveals insights into the human experience and has the power to effect change. Students will also begin exploring opportunities and career pathways of professional photographers.
